Dear HR managers and business owners, Even before the recent record-breaking opening weekend of Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith, the Star Wars movies had already generated $7.5 billion in ticket sales, and another $11 billion from merchandising. And while they were doing that, they also reconfigured the cultural landscape, provided the name for a missile defense system, and completely changed the way Hollywood does business. Pretty impressive, especially when you consider that the first film only cost $10 million, and was almost abandoned by the studio during production. What's the secret behind this success? Film scholars will tell you that it's the series' re-working of mythical archetypes, but the real secret is simpler than that: George Lucas knows how to recruit and retain top talent. And this isn't a Jedi mind trick. The Lucasfilm line-ups don't start at the box-office, but at the Human Resource department. It's challenging work and powerful compensation that draw the best in the business to the company, and an invigorating corporate culture that keeps them there. Something to think about as we build our own empires. Until next time, may the Pulse be with you. Cheers,
Bob Murray Partner, People First Solutions |
