Vancouver Recruiters

Dear HR Managers and Business Owners,

With the recent re-signing of Canucks captain Markus Naslund, Vancouver witnessed a perfect demonstration of a point we've made many times in these pages: when it comes to what attracts and retains top talent, money is seldom the only--or even the main--issue.

Naslund had offers on the table from three teams, all for three years, all for $18 million, and in the end he stayed here. Why?

According to an Associated Press report, Naslund had this to say: "We've had the best years of our lives here and I'm very happy to hopefully retire as a Canuck." What kept him here was a combination of location and loyalty, to his family, to the city, and to the team. And it probably didn't hurt that the Canucks are always serious contenders for the Stanley Cup.

BC businesses need to think hard about what they can do to inspire such loyalty in their employees. As the economy continues to improve, the booming demand for talent will put our top performers in a position of unrestricted free-agency, and in this game there won't be any trading deadlines.

Cheers,

Bob Murray

Question: How much absenteeism is there at your workplace?

Hardly any
Enough to occasionally cause some minor difficulties
Enough that it will become an issue if it gets much worse
Enough that it is already an issue
Where is everybody?

Recruiting

Becoming a Talked About Company to Attract Top Talent

The best recruiting tool in the world is to become "the most talked about place" to work. Although many firms strive to become what is known as an "employer of choice," it is a lofty, difficult, and probably an unnecessary goal for most firms. A better alternative is to do something extraordinary or innovative in the workplace that will be picked up by the media. Companies are a lot like restaurants. Your company must consciously seek out innovative things to do so that it becomes the topic of conversation and it gets people to talk about what a great place at which your company is to work.

Retaining

Building a Business Case for a Healthy Workplace

Does Canada need a comprehensive approach by organizations to workplace wellness and employee well-being that extends beyond the traditional approach to occupational health and safety? Some organizations have begun to strategically address workplace health issues. However, we need many more organizations to reach out and embrace a comprehensive approach to a healthy workplace. One reason why more organizations are not doing this is that the case does not seem as obvious for decision-makers. Therefore we need to focus on the reality of "making the business case" for a healthy workplace.
