Dear HR Managers and Business Owners, With the recent re-signing of Canucks captain Markus Naslund, Vancouver witnessed a perfect demonstration of a point we've made many times in these pages: when it comes to what attracts and retains top talent, money is seldom the only--or even the main--issue. Naslund had offers on the table from three teams, all for three years, all for $18 million, and in the end he stayed here. Why? According to an Associated Press report, Naslund had this to say: "We've had the best years of our lives here and I'm very happy to hopefully retire as a Canuck." What kept him here was a combination of location and loyalty, to his family, to the city, and to the team. And it probably didn't hurt that the Canucks are always serious contenders for the Stanley Cup. BC businesses need to think hard about what they can do to inspire such loyalty in their employees. As the economy continues to improve, the booming demand for talent will put our top performers in a position of unrestricted free-agency, and in this game there won't be any trading deadlines. Cheers,
Bob Murray Partner, People First Solutions |
