Dear HR Managers and Business Owners, I've come to the conclusion that all organizations are essentially in the same business - the business of creating value for others. But what exactly is "creating value?" Experience demonstrates that value in any situation results from three types of activities - leadership, relationship, and creativity. Leadership is simply providing direction to others, helping them to eliminate dangers, focus on their best opportunities, and showing them the path to progress. Relationship is giving others confidence that they can count on you to help reinforce their strengths. Creativity is providing capabilities that others need, perhaps in the form of specific tools, integrative structures that provide them with the "big picture", or systems that help them deal with change. Whether the recipient is an entry level staff member or the CEO of a major corporation, these components of value remain the same. And the rewards can be equally satisfying. This November, take a moment to think about how you well you bring these into your organization, and the value you want to bring to the organization in 2006. Cheers,
