THE ROLE:

Primarily focuses on providing business clients with day-to-day legal counsel and guidance.
Builds strong relationships of trust and connection with the business leaders within client organizations.
Delivers exceptional value to the client and works quickly and efficiently while juggling 5-8 matters in a day.
Engages in a diverse practice including drafting and reviewing a wide variety of contracts and other documents.
Manages legal processes, problem solving, advising and negotiation.
A trusted advisor to clients, most of whom are entrepreneurial and owner operated.
Determines and focuses on what is important – does not get stuck in the less important details.
Manages effective channels of communication with clients and the team, is responsive and keeps clients              informed of significant developments.
Collaborates with internal team, other lawyers and stakeholders to execute paperwork and complete                    transactions.

The Ideal Candidate:

8+ years as an experienced business lawyer with a broad range of corporate­ commercial experience.

A book of business and new business development is not required.

A “values driven” individual who genuinely develops relationships with clients and works respectfully with the entire team.

Collaborates well with others on the team with the ability to be comfortable and able to work well independently.

Respectful to clients and team members when under stress.

Prefers to find the answer rather than ask for it.

Very personable  and able to connect  quickly and comfortably with a variety of personality types.

Drawn to the passion and creativity of the entrepreneur.

Resourceful and creative with an ability to do something new, trusting you can “fake it ’til you make it” through rapid learning.

Desires to listen and understand the client’s objectives so as to effectively tailor advice to meet those objectives.

Project management skills with the ability to consider bigger picture as well as focus on the issue at hand.

Dedication to stay up to date and a willingness to strive for continuous improvement.

Proven background in corporate law and experience/knowledge of the areas around and informing it such as: contract law, tax law, accounting, insolvency, intellectual property rights, licensing, employment, leasing and finance.

With a pragmatic, “street smart” approach the successful candidate is able to get to the point and find solutions that make business sense.

An ability to work in an extremely fast-paced and demanding environment is essential.

Strong  judgment, excellent communication, and sound conflict management skills are essential.

Proven ability to think on your feet.

Sound drafting and negotiation skills, and the ability to anticipate, articulate clearly and protect against legal risks.

Strong IT skills and the ability to manage document and correspondence production independently.

Has a strong sense of humour: takes their work seriously, but themselves not too seriously.

Demonstrates a service-oriented humility, enjoying the success and fulfillment of others, knowing inside you have done the job well.
