Our Client 

Bloomstar Bouquet, a family owned flower supplier is searching for a Chief Executive Officer to take the company to the next level. While the company’s head office is in Vancouver, consideration will be given to candidates in Calgary and Toronto. Since 2001 Bloomstar has been supplying roses and mixed bouquets, grower bunches, centerpieces and special order arrangements for weddings, holidays and other occasions. Flowers are sourced locally and globally from Latin America and other locations around the world. The expertise, dedication and creativity of the people behind-the-scenes ensure beautiful flowers and unique bouquets are available to Canadians. Bloomstar is looking to further develop and expand its national floral wholesale business.

 

Role  

  • Reports to the Board and assures long-term growth and profitability of the company
  • In partnership with the Board, sets the company’s overall direction and long term growth plans including markets and product lines
  • In collaboration with senior management, formulates and recommends the annual operations and service plan to the Board
  • Presents operating and capital expenditure budgets to the Board for approval
  • Maintains and builds strong client relationships

 

Responsibilities 

  • Builds new business development strategies
  • Sets short, medium and long-term objectives with overall accountability to accomplish these objectives
  • Establishes and maintains positive and productive relationships within the flower industry, including international and national flower suppliers and farms
  • Consistently presents a strong positive image to industry, suppliers and business partners on behalf of Bloomstar
  • Delegates and manages executive members’ authorities and responsibilities
  • Oversees the improvement of all business and production processes and incorporate automation and technology enhancements
  • Ensures efficient use of financial resources
  • Oversees facilities, buildings and acquisitions
  • Maintains and continues to develop a values-led and productive work culture that attracts and retains talent
  • Provides leadership and strategy in the hiring process with annual performance feedback to the national executive team
  • Manages the compensation plan
  • Leads the senior management team and hold them accountable to performance standards consistent with the overall strategic plan
  • Maintains a safe work environment
  • Effectively communicates with employees, stakeholders and customers 

 

Key Criteria and Qualifications

  • More than 5 years in a Chief Executive Officer role leading a company with revenue greater than 20 million
  • Experience in mass-marketing retailing with big-box and supermarket chains stores in Canada
  • Advanced financial acumen across an entire supply chain
  • An understanding of risks, compliance and the global legal environment
  • An undergraduate degree at minimum with relevant experience, graduate degree such as a MBA, CA/CPA preferred
  • Experience working effectively within a family business
  • Effective communicator with proven leadership skills through business growth and change
  • Action-oriented and innovative, this candidate is a problem solver who sees opportunities, is a self-starter and a team player
  • Knowledge moving products from farm to fast paced retail environment, logistics and cold chain transportation experience is an asset
  • Advanced knowledge in excel
  • Familiar with technology used to improve business process efficiency
  • Must be proficient in English communication, both written and oral
  • Able to travel to countries where vaccinations are required with estimated travel about 40 days per year
  • Willing to work evenings weekends and holidays as required by industry
