T-RAIL is a member of numerous communities across Canada and strives to make a positive social and environmental impact, while increasing business sustainably.  T-RAIL is currently searching for a Controller who conveys professionalism with every interaction and is eager to take full responsibility for their own department.

The Role:

The Controller will perform full-cycle accounting and report to the Director of Sustainable Finance and Operations. The successful candidate will be a key member of the accounting team and be responsible for managing the company’s accounting across Canada. This individual will lead T-RAIL’s accounting function and build the accounting team to support continued growth.

The Responsibilities:

  • Prepare accurate and complete monthly financial statements on time, oversee annual review engagement and package preparation for external accountants
  • Be an internal leader who gains the confidence of the team, monitor key performance metrics, provide leadership and support to the accounting team
  • Actively manage financial drivers, offer recommendations, lead the team when implementing process improvements
  • Work closely with sales team to provide up to date forecasting and accounting guidance as required
  • Ensure consistency across the board and hold people accountable when procedures aren’t followed, manage difficult conversations effectively
  • Participate in hiring and training, support onboarding for all new team members, maintain accurate record keeping of all human resource functions including benefits, vacation and compensation, is trusted to keep employee information confidential
  • Gain knowledge of new and potential products and how they enhance the current product offering in relation to accounting

The Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree, CPA designation and 5+ years of post designation work experience in a similar role
  • Demonstrates exceptional decision-making and interpersonal skills, works effectively with senior management and accounting team, coachable, listens and works collaboratively with others
  • Experience in manufacturing and distribution, familiar with inventory, and managing complex orders spanning multiple financial periods
  • Advanced knowledge of full cycle accounting, reporting, payroll, accounts payable, project accounting, deposits and revenue recognition
  • Strives to make processes better, implements improved methods, a hands-on leader who is willing to discuss and implement improvements
  • Demonstrates a high level of integrity, ethics and professionalism, leads by example, excellent organization, planning and time-management skills
  • Solution oriented problem solver with demonstrated understanding of people, adaptable, works well with various personality types, avoids making assumptions by asking curious questions
  • A chameleon who understands both corporate and entrepreneurial cultures, a proven track record of being organized, deadline driven and detail oriented, a self-motivated high achiever
  • Understands applicable laws and accounting regulations on taxes, reporting and compliance, strives for continuous improvement for self and others
  • Advanced computer skills, specifically in excel and at least one leading ERP system, NetSuite experience is an asset, able to organize and summarize data for senior level readers with proven ability to identify pertinent information
  • Willing to travel across Canada to learn about and support the business
