Kobelt is a Canadian-based manufacturing company, with over 50 years of experience developing and producing high quality steering, propulsion and braking systems for the marine and industrial sectors. Kobelt has an extensive history of innovation and product development and works with a wide variety of regulatory and classification requirements around the world for system certifications and approvals. Kobelt Manufacturing is currently searching for an Electronic Controls Engineer.

The Role:

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Electronic Controls Engineer is responsible for specifying marine steering, propulsion, thruster and stabilizer control systems in response to customer inquiries. The focus includes safety, regulatory compliance, and operational requirements when generating  project proposals and engineering diagrams. This individual will also support the company’s existing electronic products and new product development by developing specifications, manuals, data sheets, as well as type testing and NCR resolutions.

The Responsibilities:

  • Create technical proposals, complete installation of schematic arrangements and engage in customer service activities, including troubleshooting
  • Work closely with engineering, quality and production teams and vendors related to implementation of capital projects
  • Review existing electronic control product designs with the goal to continuous improvement related to design, process, function and cost
  • Support the development, implementation and maintenance of engineering standard operating procedures and practices, conduct factory acceptance testing for electronic control systems
  • Provide production support services related to the controls system design, interface with customers and vendors, identifies opportunities in the market
  • Generate user manuals, data sheets, design specifications and work instructions related to the suite of control products
  • Manage the testing of new products under development as well as type approved products
  • Maintain regulatory compliance in various geographic regions as well as certification by class societies for electronic products and systems

The Requirements:

  • 10+ years of electronics experience, preferably in the marine industry, understands complex systems, able to communicate effectively with customers and put customers minds at ease
  • Entrepreneurial, ambitious, and competitive, demonstrates energy and a sense of urgency in executing day-to-day responsibilities, able to wear multiple hats
  • Knowledge and training in electronic controls is required, experience with hydraulics is an asset
  • Proficient in Altium, Autocad or Solidworks, the Office 360 suite of software, experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system is required
  • A post-secondary degree in Electronics Engineering or an Applied Science Diploma (ECET), a member in good standing with the Association of Professional Engineers is preferred
  • A team player with inner confidence and the ability to pivot and adapt to emergency situations, naturally curious with a passion for problem solving
  • Experience writing reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals, a consummate communicator who understands the impact of communication
  • Naturally leverages communication skills for success within the company and externally with customers and vendors, able to achieve team buy-in
  • Adept at making decisions, staying calm under pressure and giving clear and concise directions
  • Demonstrates strong follow-up skills, attends to the needs of the customer, a willingness to be on call and travel in emergency situations, depending on the severity of the situation
  • Must have a valid passport and be willing to travel, infrequent lifting up to 50 pounds may be required
